Michael Wilhite
Michael Wilhite began his musical training on the classical guitar and contrabass, and studied music at San Diego State University.
He began playing the lute and building lutes in 1976, and has made a study of continuo playing on the larger members of the lute family. In recent years he adopted the viola da gamba with training from Tim Scott and Joanna Blendulf.
Mr. Wilhite worked with the William Byrd Festival to bring successful performances of Byrd's consort music to Portland in 2008 and 2009. The Wilhite studio in Northwest Portland hosts a number of chamber groups that meet regularly to study renaissance and baroque music. The Wildwood Consort draws together selected players from these sessions into a versatile performing ensemble.
